I woke up at 6am, had a breakfast of granola and sliced banana with coffee, and then packed up my surf gear. The forecast looked good for Tonel so I hopped on the 7am Eva bus to Sagres. (Cost: 4.3 EUR each way). The bus stop view is not so bad in the morning with the sunrise over the channel. It’s kind of nice to meditate for a bit while waiting. On board the bus is fairly empty at this time as you can see below.
The forecast for Praia do Tonel was fairly accurate with some big sets coming through. There were a lot of powerful close outs so you had to choose your wave carefully or risk getting obliterated.
Below is a video I took right before I jumped in this morning around 8am. The paddle out was actually a lot better than I thought it would be. I went just to the right of the big rock in the middle of the beach. However, I saw others finding success to the right hand side of the beach where there is a rip.
There were a lot of fast hollow waves and I saw at least one guy get a nice left hand barrel. I was definitely jealous but I caught some nice waves and avoided any wipeouts so I was happy with my session.
After surfing for about an hour and a half, I got out, dried off and changed. Since it is the weekend, the next bus back to Lagos was not scheduled until noon. So, I hiked up to the top of the cliff and ate some snacks I had packed (Apple/ Banana/ Mixed Nuts) while watching the waves roll in and the other surfers.
At 11 am, A Sagres Cafe opens up which is nearby and right next to the bus stop. So, I hiked over and had a coffee and an omelet. (Cost 10 EUR + 1 EUR tip).
Then I hopped on the #47 Eva bus back to Lagos. (Cost: 4.3 EUR)
Meanwhile, Bi had Jules, Erik, and Gina over for brunch. (Cost: 33.55 EUR for groceries from Spar)
She made quite a spread and it looked delicious!
In the afternoon, Bi and I rode our bikes to the beach and walked to the Roman Bridge to see if the water visibility was good enough to snorkel. It was a bit choppy and murky so we just took a walk along the beach.
Then we went to see The Eternals at the Lagos Shopping Center. (Cost: 5 EUR/each plus 1 EUR for Skittles) It’s not the best Marvel movie but definitely worth the price of admission and sufficiently entertaining. The filming and visual effects are very good in my view but the story line could probably use some more development. Anyway, I enjoyed it.
